Curatorial

Generative artwork starts as a code, an application, capable of producing a large, often infinite, number of outputs (revealed artworks). Each output is different: the colors, the composition, the textures and other elements randomly change between the artworks. The NFT technology enables this randomness to be determined and assigned at the moment a collector mints (records on a blockchain) a single variant of the output, the NFT. A limited number of NFTs forms a limited edition.

It's almost like a digital printmaking with an addition of interpretational variety: code being the matrix and minted NFTs the impressions. Likewise, the original artworks are the minted NFTs, not the code that produced them. Perhaps this procedural similarity to printmaking is the reason for the similar esthetics adapted by artists and collectors in the field of Generative NFTs. The esthetics that can be traced back to the 20th century formalism. Somewhat anachronistically, this scene allows for such vintage notions as visual beauty, technical skill, poetry and lyricism.

Despite it's newness, the Generative NFT scene is a thriving space, full of artists who trust their tastes and senses, often getting ahead of cultural mediators. The "Algorithmic Impressions" exhibition presents to the viewers of Barbur gallery in Jerusalem the artworks from this little known NFT niche. It's meant to be aspirational, amusing and entertaining.
